Registered Maine Sea Kayak Guides have a long, rich history and are nationally recognized as providing a very high standard in outdoor skills and know-how. Join us for our hybrid online and on water modules March – May 2025 to help you decide if you are ready to take the Maine State Guide Test.
Maine Kayak is offering a Registered Maine Sea Kayaking Guide Course for individuals who are looking to lead sea kayaking day trips and overnight trips on coastal water in Maine.
Join Maine Kayak for our hybrid online and in-person Maine sea kayak guide course starting March 19, 2025. We will cover a variety of topics including risk management, group dynamics, navigation, environment, safety, outfitting, Maine coastal flora and fauna, leave no trace ethics and other subjects that will help you to prepare for the Registered Maine Guide exam. This 38 hour program will include 7 online modules, on water practical and a mock written and oral that will prepare you to take the Maine sea kayak guide test, a requirement of all Maine sea kayaking guides. Course dates and locations are listed below.
The Maine Kayak guide course full program for all online sessions and the on water practicum includes the 36 hour training course, all curriculum materials, kayaking equipment and paddling gear for the on-water days available for rent, and instruction from a Master Registered Maine Sea Kayak Guide and other relevant professionals. Participants are required to be experienced sea kayakers, are asked to provide paddle wear for cold water, kayaks and gear (rentals available), will be responsible for lunch each day, and bring a great sense of adventure and enthusiasm. If participants wish to pursue their guide’s license, they will be required to pay all Maine state fees (background check/fingerprinting, testing, license fees and WFA course) in addition to course fees. Sea Kayaking Guide Course –
- 2025 Online Sessions Schedule: March 19, 26; April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
- 2025 On-Water Practical Schedule: May 16, 17, 18
- Price: $40 per person, per night for online sessions = $280 total; $300 for on-water practical and $580 for full hybrid module including 7 online sessions, mock oral/written exams and on-water instruction.
- Requirements: All participants must have basic sea kayaking skills, paddling gear (rentals available), and a positive attitude
- Provided: Online course materials, course book and other necessary equipment and materials
- Minimum Age: 16
- Location: Online Sessions will be hosted virtually. On water paddle will be at Maine Kayak’s base of operation on Boothbay, Johns Bay and Muscongus Bay.

Registered Maine Guide Course
If your goal is to become a Maine Guide, you will need to submit the guide license application, testing fee and paperwork and we will help you during the online module (see Guide License application download button above for more information). Also, the State of Maine requires finger printing and a background check, which must be done on your own before you send in your application and testing fee to the State of Maine.
